Is 1:1 Counselling or Group Therapy right for me?

We all know that motherhood comes with its own set of challenges, and sometimes, we could use a little extra support to navigate the ups and downs. At Release Counselling and Therapy for Women, we offer two types of support; Group Therapy and One-to-One Counselling, but which one is the best fit for you?

Group Therapy

Our most popular options are our Mother Nurture or Second Nature therapeutic groups.

There is something so beautiful about getting amongst a circle of remarkable mums, all facing similar trials and tribulations, and so many of our past participants talk about how they felt seen and supported, and found a great support network too.

I guess the key thing to note is that all our mums are coming to the sessions because they are finding things challenging in one way or another; everyone is in the same boat! Our trained facilitators create a safe environment within our sessions by setting out a group charter, giving everyone the confidence to participate openly. Our courses offer a mix of information giving, interspersed with time for you to explore common challenges in small group settings. The value of talking with a peer group is that you find your experience both normalised and validated, whilst also getting different viewpoints and insights, allowing you to gain fresh perspectives on your own challenges. For many, it’s like finding your own tribe, and an instant support system of people who really understand what you’re going through.

There are lots of benefits to group therapy, and of course the price is definitely one, with 1:1 counselling typically costing in excess of £1 a minute, and group sessions significantly less. And with part and fully funded places available, as well as accessible payment plans to allow everyone to get the support they need, we provide mums with access to amazing support that fits any financial situation.

Of course group therapy does have some limitations, for example, although group therapy emphasises confidentiality, it's important to consider that it might be harder to maintain than in one-on-one counselling. You might also find that if you have specific issues that require deeper exploration, or unique or complex concerns, group therapy may not give you what you need.

Also, it's advisable to consider if discussing sensitive topics or hearing others' stories may be overwhelming for you. Thankfully our sessions are supported by trained therapists who can support you in the event that this might happen, but for some, group therapy can be a little overwhelming.

1:1 Counselling

Now, let's talk about one-on-one counselling - a more intimate and focused experience tailored to your specific needs, it can be particularly helpful if you have unresolved trauma or long standing mental health issues that are being exacerbated by becoming a parent.

When you work with a counsellor, you have a dedicated, confidential space in which to explore your specific concerns. You can agree on when those sessions are held, and how often, and can undertake more individualised therapeutic work with the counsellors focused guidance, allowing for intensive exploration, insight, and personal growth.

Downsides could be that you get a narrower perspective and a lack of peer support, and in some cases people can find themselves feeling quite dependent on their therapists. In addition, 1:1 counselling comes at a higher cost however, at Release, we do offer flexibility around cost, tailoring it to your financial situation.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

Now that we've explored the pros and cons of group therapy and 1:1 counselling, the big question remains: which path should you choose? The answer is unique to you and depends on your personal preferences, needs, and circumstances.

Consider group therapy if you crave a supportive community of like-minded mums, shared experiences and diverse perspectives, and are looking for a cost-effective option. Group therapy can be particularly beneficial if you want to feel validated in your struggles and have social interaction with people who “get it”.

On the other hand, if you desire personalised attention, prefer a more focused and confidential environment, and have specific concerns that require in-depth exploration, individual counselling might be the better choice for you. 1:1 counselling allows for targeted treatment, flexibility, and intensive work tailored to your unique needs.

Remember, there's no right or wrong decision here. The most important thing is that you prioritise your well-being and take the step to seek support. Both group therapy and 1:1 counselling offer valuable opportunities for growth, healing, and self-discovery.

If you're still unsure about which option to pursue, don't hesitate to reach out to us and we can guide you in making an informed decision that aligns with your goals and circumstances.

Most importantly though please remember, you're not alone in this beautiful yet challenging journey of motherhood. Whether you choose group therapy or 1:1 counselling, know that seeking support is a brave and empowering step. Embrace the opportunity to connect, learn, and grow as you navigate the ups and downs of being a mum. Remember, you deserve all the support and care you can get. When you’re ready, we are here for you.
